Portland has a unique charm, but it faces pressing economic challenges that require bold, decisive action. As your representative for District 4, I am committed to reigniting Portland’s economic engine. My plan focuses on creating opportunities, supporting local businesses, and ensuring economic growth reaches every corner of our community—from the small businesses that are the backbone of our neighborhoods to new investments that can transform our future.
1. Prioritizing Small Business Growth and Local Entrepreneurs
Small businesses shape our community and employ many Portlanders. My first priority is to foster an environment where these businesses can flourish. This includes streamlining permitting processes, cutting unnecessary red tape, and offering targeted grants to local entrepreneurs, especially for underrepresented communities in our district.
Investing in community-based economic programs, like those initiated by the Prosper Portland framework, will also allow us to provide technical support, seed funding, and business incubators. These initiatives will make it easier for new enterprises to open their doors and for established businesses to grow and hire more workers.
Economic revitalization must also look to the future. Portland’s leadership in green initiatives, including the Portland Clean Energy Fund, demonstrates our potential to become a hub for sustainable industry. I propose policies that attract clean-tech companies to District 4, creating high-paying jobs while advancing Portland’s commitment to sustainability.
We will also focus on partnerships with institutions and industries in technology, arts, and green energy to ensure that our district becomes a center for innovation. This will make our district a magnet for talent and create job opportunities across diverse sectors.
3. Investing in Infrastructure to Boost Commerce and Livability
Improving our district’s infrastructure will play a critical role in driving economic growth. From upgrading transportation networks to repurposing vacant spaces, we can ensure that commerce flows efficiently. Investing in neighborhood revitalization projects will also enhance livability by attracting businesses and residents alike.
The Public Environment Management Office’s success in addressing graffiti and abandoned vehicles offers a model. By activating public spaces through murals, landscaping, and infrastructure improvements, we can foster an environment that promotes both business and community well-being.
4. Building Workforce Development Programs
To sustain long-term economic growth, we must equip Portlanders with the skills they need to succeed. I will champion workforce development programs that connect residents with high-demand jobs through apprenticeships, job training, and partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions. Programs like these are essential to closing employment gaps and ensuring that everyone can participate in the economic revival of our district.
5. Addressing Housing Affordability and Homelessness to Support Growth
Affordable housing is critical to economic development. Businesses need employees who can afford to live near where they work. My plan emphasizes expanding affordable housing options and addressing homelessness comprehensively. This will make District 4 a more attractive place for businesses, workers, and families alike.
I believe in Portland’s potential to overcome the challenges we face. By investing in businesses, supporting entrepreneurs, enhancing infrastructure, and preparing our workforce for the future, we can create a thriving District 4 that works for everyone. With your support, we will ensure that Portland remains a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive city for generations to come.
Let’s work together to make District 4 a beacon of opportunity.
